Historic Turning Point: Web Bot Traffic Surpasses Human Traffic for the First Time, AI Agents Reshape the Internet Landscape at Speed

The internet’s traffic composition is undergoing an unprecedented reversal. Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, recently revealed that traffic generated by web bots has overtaken human user traffic for the first time. Based on current statistics, bots account for 57.5% of all HTTP requests across websites, while human users make up the remaining 42.5%.
The Turning Point Arrives Earlier Than Expected, Powered by AI Agents
This historic crossover happened much sooner than projected. Prince initially forecast it would take place at the end of 2027, later revising the timeline to early 2027. Nevertheless, the rapid rise and widespread adoption of AI agents have driven bot traffic growth far beyond expectations, bringing this milestone forward.
Evolving Roles: From Dark Web Crawlers to Cyber Personal Assistants
Modern bot traffic is no longer limited to traditional web crawlers, search indexers or malicious scripts for fraud and abuse. The bulk of new traffic growth comes from AI agents and chatbots.
Operating in a manner highly similar to human users, these AI agents navigate across the internet to perform various tasks: browsing product pages, checking prices, comparing flight information and collecting indexed content. They also act as personal assistants, placing food orders, conducting price comparisons and interacting with customer service on people’s behalf. Their high-frequency automated activities have become the primary driver behind surging bot request volumes.
Humans Still Dominate In-Depth Internet Engagement Despite Lower Request Numbers
Addressing concerns that humans have become a minority on the internet, Cloudflare clarified that the statistics measure request volume, not user engagement.
Bot visits are typically frequent and fragmented. In contrast, human users still dominate in-depth internet activities, including app usage duration, video streaming and feed browsing. In short, bots generate far more requests, but humans remain the core consumers of online content.
