Meta Enters Paid Era: AI Chatbots and Social Traffic Integrated into Subscription Services

CLS News, May 28 (Edited by Shi Zhengcheng)
After pouring hundreds of billions of US dollars into artificial intelligence, Meta, one of the world’s largest social media and cloud service providers, has finally moved to monetize its offerings, a long-awaited move for its shareholders.
The company announced on Wednesday that it will roll out beta tests for paid Meta AI subscription services starting next month, alongside dedicated subscription packages for businesses and content creators. For individual users, Meta’s three major platforms will launch monthly subscriptions priced at $3 or $4, unlocking a host of personalized features.
Driven by the news, Meta’s stock rallied during trading hours and closed nearly 4% higher.
Launch of AI Subscription Services
Though Meta is not widely recognized for cutting-edge AI models, its new paid AI subscriptions are now officially unveiled.
The company revealed two tiers of AI subscription plans. Meta One Plus, priced at $7.99 per month, targets heavy users who frequently generate images and videos via Meta AI or leverage its advanced reasoning capabilities. The higher-tier Meta One Premium costs $19.99 monthly, featuring all functions of Meta One Plus with drastically expanded usage quotas.
In line with mainstream competitors, Meta’s AI chatbot will remain free to access for all users, albeit with usage caps. The company did not disclose the specific limits for each tier, only stating that Premium subscribers will enjoy far more generous quotas than Plus users.
Meta plans to invest up to $145 billion in AI within the current fiscal year and allocate at least $600 billion to AI infrastructure over the next several years. Monetizing AI services directly marks a major business milestone for the firm. Currently, over 98% of Meta’s revenue comes from social media ad sales.
Meta added that it will expand these AI initiatives in the coming weeks to deliver exclusive perks for users of its smart glasses. The beta launch will kick off next month in Singapore, Guatemala and Bolivia.
Beyond AI, Meta will also begin testing two subscription plans for content creators and enterprises later this week.
Meta One Essential: Priced at $14.99 per month, it includes verified badges and impersonation protection, similar to mainstream verification services across social platforms.
Meta One Advanced: Retailing at $49.99 per month, it covers all features of the Essential plan, plus priority placement in Facebook feeds, higher rankings in search results, and automatic follow requests sent to users who interact with the account’s content.
Rollout of Individual User Subscriptions
Meta has also introduced paid plans for its nearly 4 billion monthly active users across its social platforms worldwide.
The company confirmed on Wednesday that Plus subscriptions are now available for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus are priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus costs $2.99 monthly.

The three plans are tailored to each platform: Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus focus on enhanced social expression tools, while WhatsApp Plus centers on personalized settings and messaging features. In short, the subscriptions help users customize their accounts to stand out.
Helen Ma, Head of Subscription Business at Meta, noted that users can purchase subscriptions for each app separately or opt for bundled packages.
