Pentagon Accelerates Phase-out of Claude, Tests Multiple Models to Build New Supplier Ecosystem
May 22, Gelonghui — Citing a senior U.S. Department of Defense official, foreign media reports that the Pentagon is testing various AI models to identify the preferred options among its 25 elite super users, as the U.S. military speeds up the search for alternatives to Anthropic’s Claude.
The senior official stated the tests kicked off in early March, merely three days after Defense Secretary Hegseth designated Anthropic a supply chain risk. Having decided to sever ties with Anthropic, the Pentagon sets a six-month timeline to phase out the firm’s products. Earlier this month, the defense authority sealed new deals with multiple other enterprises to deploy their AI tools on classified networks, aiming to establish a diversified supplier framework.
